August 7, 2020Arthritis is a general term for conditions that affect the joints or tissues around the joint. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Arthritis affects more than 54 million US adults. There are more than 100 types of arthritis. Most types of arthritis cause pain and stiffness in and around the affected joint or joints.
One of the major characteristics of arthritis is morning stiffness, if you or your loved one are struggling with arthritis, here are some tips to help manage arthritis pain and ease morning stiffness.
Stretch in bed
You can do some light stretches while still in bed. Move the stiff joints slowly and gently, bending and extending the joints will increase blood flow to your joints. The repeated gentle movement will help loosen the tight joints.
Turn up the heat
Heat improves circulation, relaxes the muscles, and reduces pain. You can use a warming blanket or heating pad to warm your body in the morning. A warm shower or bath can be helpful too.
Take your medication early
Keep your medication and a bottle of water beside your bed, so you can take your medication as soon as you wake up, to give the medicine time to work and help ease your symptoms before it is time to get up.
Eat a healthy breakfast
Eating a healthy breakfast can give the body the energy it needs to get going. Try to include as many anti-inflammatory foods as possible, like berries, grapes, or avocados for toast.
Go for a walk
Walking supports the joints and strengthens the muscles around them. It also gives you energy and helps you stay at a healthy weight.
